Custom Motorcycle Exhaust

Getting a custom motorcycle exhaust is not as easy as it sounds, and installing it can be even more difficult. I have lately been looking for a new custom exhaust and know all the pitfalls. The reason I want my own custom exhaust is because I love a real loud rumble. You can make many different choices when replacing the exhaust system on your motorcycle. There are 2-in-2 systems, Y pipes, straight, baffled and unbaffled drag pipes.

The next question is what brand name to pick. There seems to be over hundred different motorcycle exhaust manufacturers today. I really like the 2-in-1 exhaust pipes that are styled after the classic Street Rod side pipes, the 2” exhaust pipes that are constructed out of 16 gauge steel around you engine. These exhaust pipes scream out authority.

So, how to install a new custom motorcycle exhaust? Start by unbolting the old exhaust and get ready to replace it. It’s not very hard but there are a few things to consider.

All you need is simple hand tools to perform the exhaust change. A few wrenches and a matching socket set. You might also need an Allen wrench. Usually all you need to remove is the OEM exhaust system and you don’t need to remove any other parts to install the new exhaust. On some models you need to remove the radiator to gain access to front cylinder head pipe.

Start by loosening all of the bolts and nuts that attach the exhaust system. Once everything is loose, you can start removing the bolts. When all bolts are gone you can start to remove the components (start with the muffler). When you have the muffler off you can also remove the head pipes.

Next up is to remove the exhaust gaskets if they still are there. Now you are ready to install the new gaskets. Place the head pipes in position. Everything should fit with ease; a minimum amount of force should be needed.

When everything is installed and look good you can tighten it up. Start tightening the head pipe first. Then you process with the rest, working your way backward to the muffler.

That’s it, you are ready to start up your motorcycle and listen to that sweet new sound.
